While we celebrate the Gold medal winning Somali-British athlete Mo Farah, lets take a moment to remember Samia Yusuf Omar. Until the start of the London 2012 Games, Samia was Somalia’s best hope at winning a medal in the Olympics. Her triumph came to a tragic end just before the opening ceremonies as she drowned off the Libyan coast. Samia was on a mission to train for the London 2012 Games in Italy before her boat capsized. In her stead running at the Games was Samsam Mohamed. You may recall that Samira ran in the 200m at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Take a moment to remember her triumph as we celebrate the victories of other Somali athletes today.
